I’ve known since January that The Drums were going to be my favorite summer band—or at least “Let’s Go Surfing” would be my summer 2010 jam. This prediction, made huddled in my dorm with a sweatshirt on, blanket around me and hot cup of tea in hand, has held remarkably true.
The Drums fall into my favorite genre of music—catchy music with depressing lyrics. The band says “We only write about two feelings: one is the first day of summer when you and all of your friends are standing on the edge of a cliff watching the sun set and being overcome with all of your hopes and dreams at once. The other is when you’re walking alone in the rain and realize you will be alone forever.” Although this holds true, it doesn’t make it undanceable. Musically, the band is a fresh mix of 1960s surf pop (as proven in “Let’s Go Surfing”) and 80s synth pop (“Skippin’ Town” blends these two styles nicely). I don’t know about you, dear reader, but personally I find myself trying to decide whether or not my favorite dance music is the Beach Boys, my “new wave greatest hits cd” or, recently (and kind of embarrassingly) Katy Perry’s new single. So The Drums take care of all my musical conflicts, minus my love for “California Gurls.”
Listen to: “Let’s Go Surfing” “Best Friend” & “Forever and Ever Amen”
Okay, and even if you don’t listen to the album, check out the singer’s dancing.
