Every summer has it’s jam. It’s almost a legal requirement. You need that song that you play at every party, that you play while you’re at the beach, on a road trip, you know…summer things.
I know I’m not the authority or leader on these issues but I have already declared the two bands that will provide the soundtrack for your summer: The Drums and Sleigh Bells.
The Drums are a four piece from Brooklyn (wherever that is) and play very upbeat poppy songs about very sad things. Get it? It’s like totally irony brah. Musically they sound like a combination between mid-period poppy Cure and combined with sunny guitar lines that careen over handclaps and sing along choruses. The songs are sunny bite size pieces of pop that are the perfect background for speeding along the interstate. The lyrics are surprisingly biting and dark at times but I like the combination of upbeat music with darker undertones. The Drums debut album is coming out later this summer (though we have a new sampler of their stuff in the studio) and they had a beach themed EP out last fall.
Where the Drums can provide the soundtrack to the more laid back parts of your summer, Sleigh Bells are in your face party music. Songs about sippin’ on Kool Aid, Cowboys and Indians, fixing your hair, you know…vapid things. My favorite line being “Rock Horns. Best Friends”. That’s what summer is all about. Bored teens driving around listening to heavy metal. Sleigh Bells are what I secretly wished my high school marching band had been. Bombastic beats, schoolyard chants, faux-metal guitar riffs, pounding keyboard and leading it all like a deranged cheerleader lead singer Alexis Krauss sounds like that chick in high school who was way too hot to even look at you. I would blast this is at any party and if anyone stays still…you might be hanging with the wrong crowd man.
The best thing is these two bands sort of play up to the two sides of summer: the Drums playing more laidback cynical tunes and Sleigh Bells as the soundtrack to your summer party.
