Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti are undoubtably my favorite discovery of this year in term of music (my TRULY favorite discovery of the year would probably have to be in how coffeepots work… to be brutally honest).
It’s really hard for me to explain their music to someone who has never heard it before. It’s sort of if your favorite 60s soul hits, 70s funk, 80s pop ala’ Michael Jackson was strained through some 1930s recorder by a crazy hobo who lives under the bridge. It’s both creepy, scary and oddly catchy. It sounds like the dregs of 70s AM radio were fished out of the monterey bay by a poor man’s Burt Bacharach and then dipped in acid for 4 hours (this makes perfect sense if you hear his music)
Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti is actually the work of one man from California named Ariel Marcus Rosenburg. He was discovered after handing one of his tapes to a member of Animal Collective who helped make him the “big star” he’s become today.
His new single “Round and Round” off of his next release is so great. It seriously bends my mind like nothing else has in ages. The great thing about Ariel Pink is that it is nearly impossible to compare him to any other artist today. He bends so many genres and breaks so many boundaries he really has a sound unto himself alone.
So the gist of this is” CANNOT WAIT for his next album coming out this summer on 4AD.”
