As I walked into the WBCR studio today to do my afternoon show, there was an array of cds lying out in front of the computer. Nothing unusual—Joanna Newsom, Happy Birthday and other various new music. One album spoke to me and changed the way I view poetry—and life—forever. It was an album of the poetry of Robert Peters.
Robert Peters is an 84 year-old man from the North woods of Wisconsin (my home area). In Going down The River In A Hayloft Coffin: The Evocative Eyars of Robert Peters, a collection of 49 poems, he reflects upon his life in the North woods. With poem such as “Old Man Observes a Mall’s X-mas Tree,” “Separation Poem & on Being Awakened Too Early,” and “Meditation on Skin,” Robert Peters provides a startling (and accurate!) perspective on the North Woods. I know this because I’ve lived there for 4.5 years and totally know what they’re all about.
So if you’re in the studio, please pick up this album for a wonderful experience. I know I’m going to cherish it for the remainder of my WBCR years.
