We're Alive!
Hello everyone! Hope your summers are going swimmingly.
Here’s an update from us here at WBCR. July has been a busy month. Marlee managed to get herself up to the Winnipeg folk festival and record some station tags.
Here she is talking to Gary Louris and Mark Olsen of the Jayhawks, some personal heroes of hers.
Great new music recently from Dawes, Gomez and many others. We’ve...

Anonymous asked: Hey, the old station IDs are great. The Rascals and Dick Biondi are on it, too. "Turn into peanut butter" at the end of Dick Biondi's ID was the catch phrase of his WCFL colleague DJ Barney Pip.

Smell ya later!
Well Sunday is our last day of summer programming. It’s been a pretty good summer here at WBCR. Lots of great new releases, new equipment, cleaning up, loads and loads of neverending alphabetizing, Pitchfork and some really kick-a$$ programmers ( I really enjoyed using the $). Make sure to stay tuned though as our awesome new board starts this fall. I predict great things for the station...

Karin's Pitchfork Retrospective Spectacular!
Unlike Bebe, I have lost my Pitchfork virginity, and overall I’d say that the second time was a much more enjoyable time than the first. I knew how this festival worked, I was practically pro, so my anticipation and excitement didn’t come until a few days before we left for the festival, but all and all Pitchfork 2010 delivered. I admit, getting press passes did add to my excitement....
What's this "Pitchspoon" I keep hearing about?
So I never thought I’d tell this to anyone but….I’m a Pitchfork virgin. Yes dear Tumblr’ers little Bebe has never been to Pitchfork before, but can you blame me? Going to high school in Colorado makes it awfully hard to think about driving 2000 miles to see someone whose claim to fame is reaching a high decimal point grade on an ablum.
So it was with great excitement, fear...

From the Vault: A little Nilsson anyone?
The last few weeks on and off Karin and I have been reorganizing, organizing, anatagonizing etc…over our massive vinyl library. Basically it consists of me working for ten minutes then screaming out and getting distracted by some gem I find. It’s kind of fun actually.
I figured that though I try to highlight our newer releases it doesn’t hurt to acknowledge all the old great...
So far this summer we've...
Completely reorganized the CDs!
Accumulated 22 boxes of shit music.
Started working on organizing our very extensive vinyl collection.
Made lots of progress with getting our own independent web stream.
Got lots of new labels (especially folk and blues) to send us stuff!!!
Cleaned up the office.
Put up lots of new posters and old WBCR pictures.
Written a concise history of the station (see...
Summer Jamz '10
Every summer has it’s jam. It’s almost a legal requirement. You need that song that you play at every party, that you play while you’re at the beach, on a road trip, you know…summer things.
I know I’m not the authority or leader on these issues but I have already declared the two bands that will provide the soundtrack for your summer: The Drums and Sleigh Bells.
The...
OH BOY! Summer Programming Starts Today!
That’s right my beautiful little Tumblr children. Starting today WBCR is back. Back like Back to the Future. Back like you should totally tune in right now.

WBCR: A History Lesson
Some form of WBCR-FM has been in existence since 1907. That year, Professor Dr. Culver began experimenting with radio. Since Beloit was one of the first stations in the nation, Dr. Culver felt that Beloit’s radio program could be of some use during the First World War and he created a radio corps based in Beloit. The unit had 76 members and over half were either Beloit students or alumni.
After...
The Biggest Disappointment of the Summer...Sonic...
…and honestly, I’m heartbroken. The album I’m referring to is In The Fishtank 9 who’s cd case totes it as “sonic youth + ICP + The Ex.” It was actually a collaboration with the ICP Orchestra. In the Fishtank is actually a collaboration series where they take musicians who normally wouldn’t work together and they create an album. So, in light of this...
Existential ramblings (of sorts) of a temporary...
I’ve always considered new music director to be the most glamorous position on staff at WBCR, or any radio station for that matter. They hold in their hands, the power and luxury to play new music first—before the common mass of programmers. To choose what gets played on the radio. Whether or not a band gets played on the air, is completely up to them and their mood that day. At...
Most anticpated new release:Ariel Pink's Haunted...
Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti are undoubtably my favorite discovery of this year in term of music (my TRULY favorite discovery of the year would probably have to be in how coffeepots work… to be brutally honest).
It’s really hard for me to explain their music to someone who has never heard it before. It’s sort of if your favorite 60s soul hits, 70s funk, 80s pop...
Applications out now!
Oh hey pretty boys and girls, we’ve started taking in applications for summer programmers. Our first round are due May 20, but for those of you who wont be in Beloit for a little while we have a second round in a couple weeks. Pick them up in the mail center or email us for one at wbcrfm@gmail.com. It’s gonna be the Summer of Love all over again at WBCR this summer.
Male Bonding-Nothing Hurts
Been reviewing so much lately, lot of great stuff but after 2 days straight listening to music it can all blend into one. However, one new release that has really stuck with me is the band Male Bonding and their album Nothing Hurts. This album is so good, I want to play it for everyone.
The band is a British three-piece and their debut album was released by Sub-Pop, which is pretty appropriate...
In the studio again...
and holy heavens there is so much mail! We got two—count ‘em—TWO boxes filled with mail. So much new music to review! Aside from the countless cds, we also got: a bag of candy, a frisbee and a packet of ribbons for the record player (at least I assume that’s what they’re for). If WBCR went trick-or-treating and today was October 31st instead of May 13th, I would...

the end of the semester
Well, its been quite the year here at WBCR. Everything from a new board of directors, narwhal shirts of awesomeness, awards ceremonies and lots of lots of new music has been played. We’ve had our issues (our tempormental webstream and the death of our 360 machine RIP) but we’ve triumphed over them. Programming ends this Sunday, so be sure to tune in! http://www.beloit.edu/wbcr/

Let's Get Physical
Two recent releases that I highly recommend and that act as compliments to each other are “Headfirst” by Goldfrapp and “The Optimist” by New Young Pony Club. More people are probably familiar with Goldfrapp, the duo of Singer Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory. Their new album is a return to their electro-disco glam roots and is the ideal soundtrack to any jazzercise sesh or...
Titus Andronicus →
jamieboogies:
Titus Andronicus likes Beloit College C-haus. A place where I saw many a fine show in my day… and drank lots of Berghoff and Huber… and boogied the night away.
I was at this show! It was a little too rowdy for me but WBCR is glad to see Titus Andronicus give Beloit some lovin’.
ps. we have their new album.
Robert Peters
As I walked into the WBCR studio today to do my afternoon show, there was an array of cds lying out in front of the computer. Nothing unusual—Joanna Newsom, Happy Birthday and other various new music. One album spoke to me and changed the way I view poetry—and life—forever. It was an album of the poetry of Robert Peters.
Robert Peters is an 84 year-old man from the North woods...
Why Should Anyone Still Listen to Pavement?
So recently in the studio we got “Quarantine the Past: The Best of Pavement”. I’ve always been a gigantic Pavement fan, but something about recieving their greatest hits collection was a little jarring. Why still listen to Pavement? Why are they so important? Or are they at all?
I remember the first time I heard Pavement. I was 14 or 15 and my dad gave me some obscure EP of...
